Recruiting new trainers to your armies though involves defeating them in battle, with optional side battles allowing you to beef up your staffing levels relatively easily. Although each trainer can only field one pokémon at a time they can still catch more than one, by having their existing critter sidle up to a wild pokémon and make friends with them by completing a simple rhythm action mini-game. You can also evolve pokémon by levelling them up in the normal fashion. The elemental weaknesses and strengths common to the mainline games are retained but they play a relatively minor role in most battles.
Trainers can also carry an item, such as restorative potions. They also have a passive ability each, such as moving again after defeating an enemy or being immune to ground attacks if they float.Įach pokémon’s samurai trainer also has a special ‘Warrior Skill’, which can be used only once per battle and does things like temporarily increasing the pokémon’s range or defence, or restoring everyone’s health. Each pokémon only has one move, but you can field up to six at a time in each battle.
The basics are very similar to games like Advance Wars or Disagea, where you can move your pokémon once per turn and then attack at the end if they’re within range of an enemy. Each is different and for the main story stages they usually have some sort environmental gimmick, such as buttons that shoot electric bolts across the screen or instant short cuts and bear pits hidden in the grass. The game’s impressively smooth learning curve first introduces the basics of combat, which take place on small turn-based grids. And yet the goal of the game is still to conquer and ‘unify’ the 17 kingdoms (one per pokémon type), thereby awakening legendary pokémon Arceus.
Given the game’s ultra low age rating none of the human characters are shown using weapons and all of the battles are played out using pokémon. Officially Pokémon Conquest isn’t set in Japan but in a new Pokémon region called Ransei. This is the first time though he’s tried to conquer the world through the medium of pokémon acquisition. He also turns up in the Western-made Total War: Shogun 2. Oda Nobunaga is a pivotal, and controversial, character in Japanese history and has appeared in all manner of different games, from demonic villain in Onimusha to a more sympathetic portrayal in Ninja Gaiden II.
